Deterministic models for traffic jams

چکیده
We study several deterministic one-dimensional traffic models. For integer positions and velocities we find the typical high and low density phases separated by a simple transition. If positions and velocities are continuous variables the model shows self-organized criticality driven by the slowest car.

Traffic jams and ordering far from thermal equilibrium
The recently suggested correspondence between domain dynamics of traffic models and the asymmetric chipping model is reviewed. It is observed that in many cases traffic domains perform the two characteristic dynamical processes of the chipping model, namely chipping and diffusion. This correspondence indicates that jamming in traffic models in which all dynamical rates are non-deterministic tak...
متن کاملOn the existence of a variational principle for deterministic cellular automaton models of highway traffic flow
It is shown that a variety of deterministic cellular automaton models of highway traffic flow obey a variational principle which states that, for a given car density, the average car flow is a non-decreasing function of time. This result is established for systems whose configurations exhibits local jams of a given structure. If local jams have a different structure, it is shown that either the...

متن کاملThe Ergodic Theory of Traffic Jams
We introduce and analyze a simple probabilistic cellular automaton which emulates the flow of cars along a highway. Our Traffic CA captures the essential features of several more complicated algorithms, studied numerically by K. Nagel and others over the past decade as prototypes for the emergence of traffic jams. By simplifying the dynamics, we are able to identify and precisely formulate the ...
متن کاملHysteresis phenomenon in deterministic traffic flows
We study phase transitions of a system of particles on the one-dimensional integer lattice moving with constant acceleration, with a collision law respecting slower particles. This simple deterministic “particle-hopping” traffic flow model being a straightforward generalization to the well known Nagel-Schreckenberg model covers also a more recent slow-to-start model as a special case. The model...
